The White Rose Practical Philosophy Network

  • Launching the WRPPN!
  • Date for your diary!
  • Call to submit to give a talk!

We are announcing a major new initiative between the philosophers at Leeds, Sheffield and York.  We have created the White Rose Practical Philosophy Network (WRPPN), supported by the three Departments and the White Rose.  This is to support philosophy in all areas and topics of metaethics, normative ethics, applied and practical ethics, aesthetics, and social and political philosophy, including history of philosophy in relation to these.

We are inviting any faculty member (but particularly early-career researchers) and ALL postgraduates – MAs and PhDs – at the three universities to join.  We will start by organizing three gatherings in the three universities.  Sheffield in Autumn 2025, York in Spring 2026 and to kick things off…..

  • Leeds – the IDEA Centre, Blenheim Terrace
  • Friday 20th June
  • 10.30 am start

The plan is:

  • 10,00 – arrive and refreshments
  • 10.30-12.30 – Masterclass for Postgraduates on Normative Powers (promising, consenting, forgiving, the very idea) with Joe Bowen, Danielle Bromwich, Paula Satne and Erik Zhang (all Leeds) – short talks plus discussion.  This will be aimed at all postgrads as a quick way to learn about and discuss a hot topic in practical philosophy
  • 12.30-1.30 buffet lunch
  • 1.30-5.00 – open sessions for postgrads and faculty to present short papers, including refreshments.
  • Drinks and dinner

(1) We will have some funds to support postgraduates for travel, likely up to £40 each.

(2) Lunch and refreshments are free.  (Drinks and dinner are own expense.)

We are now asking you to put the date in your diary and make every effort to come.

We also want many people to come to talk and share their work in a friendly and supportive set of afternoon sessions.  You can present developed work and arguments or just pitch inchoate ideas.   We are aiming for each session to be 20 mins talk with 10 mins Q&A.  To submit:
