4D Philosophy: A collaboration between the Centre for Engaged Philosophy and the Digital Commons.

Digital: engage with new digital technologies

Development: develop new skills in using these and relating them to your philosophical ideas

Democratised: the novel expressive resources are in your hands

Decolonised: an emancipatory pedagogical model, where new forms of dialogue and expression can shape our understandings

The project aims to encourage students to engage with some of the technologies on offer in the Digital Commons, and to think creatively about some of the ideas they encounter on their philosophy degree and how they connect to the material world around us.

We are used to engaging with philosophical ideas and arguments on the written page or through spoken word. What novel understandings of these arguments and ideas if they are  represented in novel media – 3D printed, coded, stitched, augmented with XR technologies…?

Students are invited to pitch their ideas for creative projects – what idea they seek to represent, and what they envisage making. They will then have the opportunity to work with the team from the Digital Commons to use the tools and resources to make their creative project.

We are hoping that students are inspired to take part!

The nuts and bolts:

  • Any interested students should attend the Intro to the Digital commons session, at 1pm on Friday 25th October, room 1.20 in the Information Commons
  • Students should  then develop a 1 page pitch, and submit it by 2pm on Friday 29th November to: j.d.holroyd@sheffield.ac.uk
  • By the end of term (Fri 20th December), we will contact those students whose pitches have been successful to set up a plan to work with the digital commons to make their idea come to life!
  • We hope that in Spring 2025 we can host an exhibition of the fantastic creations the students develop!
